triplejunearthed.com turns one!
Get the party poppers out, grab some sparklers and turn the music up, because triplejunearthed.com is turning one!
One year on the Unearthed community is now over 80,000 strong and there are over 10,000 artists on the site with more than 24,000 tracks to listen to. We here at triple j are continually searching through the site to find good stuff to play on-air and promote. And it's not just us who's listening... Jesse Hughes, Blue King Brown, The Hilltop Hoods, Josh Pyke and Chris Taylor from the Chaser are just some of our guests who have lent an ear. Not to mention our great cast of superusers, comprised of registered users on the site we've noticed have been writing good reviews.
We've had a swag of competitions which have provided real-life opportunities such as playing at major music festivals, supporting big name acts like Missy Higgins and the Eagles of Death Metal and getting to open our very own AWOL concerts.
And speaking of competitions we managed to cause a few ripples in the nerdy technology sphere as well. Earlier this year we were thrilled to find out that triplejunearthed.com was judged to be the 'Best of the Best' website by the Australian Interative Media Industry Association (AIMIA). We like to think of them as the Australian Oscars for websites.
So what's next on the cards? To download the latest featured music presented by your favourite triple j folk subscribe to our brand new podcast! It's half an hour of the latest greatest stuff we've heard on Unearthed and it's updated every single week. Take a listen »
We're also planning lots of new exciting competitions and working out ways to keep supporting unsigned Australian music. So...thanks for celebrating our birthday with us and making it such a great year. Now we've hit the tender age of one we are ready to really find our feet and hit our next year running!
Wanna know what it feels like to win an Unearthed competition? Here's just a handful of our winners from the past year describing their experience.
How did you feel when you found out you had won an Unearthed comp?
"We were in disbelief when we found out we had won an unearthed comp, it really made us reflect on our attitude towards the group, because until that point we weren't taking it too seriously. It boosted our confidence, as triplej does carry a lot of street cred.
Winning unearthed has definitely been beneficial to E.E.S., it has helped us secure gigs at festivals, partial sponsorship by Oporto, a packaging and distribution deal, given us national airplay, placed us on JTV, we've now played with almost the entirety of the who's who of aussie hip-hop (only Koolism, Brad Strut and the Tongue to go) and now girls sometimes talk to me."
E.E.S - Strikeback regional NSW winners
"Being thrown (live to air) with Rosie Beaton to learn of our winning the Eagles of Death metal support was one of the most surreal experiences of my life. It has certainly helped us with our profile. The amount of fans we gained after the EODM support was instant and the media response was also very favorable."
Bowser - Eagles of Death Metal QLD winners
"Brendan our bass player claimed to be punching the roof of his car and bouncing up and down on his seat, as he heard the news live on JJJ radio on his way to work, to the bemusement of other motorists. I think that about sums it up for all of us actually."
Y - Push Over Festival Melbourne
"I actually felt a bit strange about winning the flesh
it out competition. i felt like my music was still
very unformed and vague. But as a result of this (the trip to adelaide's fuse
festival and recording with linda radclyffe), i've
made some discoveries about myself and the music i
want to create.
The unearthed website is truly amazing. I've heard
from so many people with really interesting ideas; I
think that's so valuable -- to hear what listeners are
thinking."
Cathy Petocz - Flesh it Out Singer/Songwriter National competition
"SHOCK!...Eagles of Death Metal are our heroes so it was amazing to be playing with them! I can't speak for the whole band, but the only thing I'd ever won was a Baby Sitters Club book for decorating my bike the best in Primary School, so this was a slight step up!"
The Watt Riot - Eagles of Death Metal NSW winners
"Winning the triple j unearthed competition to support Missy Higgins for the Victorian shows of her National tour was so very surreal. I knew I was entered into the competition but I didn’t ever think I would win out of all the other bands and artists from Victoria. I was told the day before the competition winners were announced that I was ‘shortlisted’ even then I thought it was great but I didn’t think it was actually going to happen. I remember telling my mum on the phone after I found out and she was hysterical and so very excited as was I but I hadn’t sunk in to my brain.
Since winning the competition I am definitely in a better position than I was as an artist, winning the comp has kinda given me a little lift to a new place in my musical pursuits. It’s nice to get recognised for something that you have created as sometimes you feel like you are slogging away for nothing; it’s a sort of a validation I suppose."
Ainslie Wills - Missy Higgins VIC winner
"It was all a bit surreal when we were told we won the comp - was the only comp that we've ever entered as a band and never really gave ourselves much of a chance, but more so figured it would be a good oppurtunity to get ourselves out there a little more. Since the competition, we've been absolutely flat out - We signed to the label Pee Records in March and released our debut EP 'Lights On St.George'. We got the oppurtunity to support NOFX in Perth in Feb and have only just come back from an eastern states tour. Unearthed has been a major factor in all this as it's given us a lot of recognition as a band and made us a lot more accessible and appealing to promoters/labels."
