Tell us about your music. How did you develop your sound?
We got together in Newcastle. I'd had a big, wet crush on the boys and our combined love of whiskey and fierce guitar tones sealed the deal. The development of the sound is largely the result of long, sweaty hours in the studio and letting the boys take a knife to my tunes. Lately though, our songwriting sessions have been reduced to driving the Hume for hours at a time, blaring Lana Del Rey.

What's a Kira Puru & The Bruise live show like?
It's not glamourous. Or sparkly. People say it's like watching a fight.

Kira, you're one the winners of our APRA/AMCOS Song Summit competition. What are you most looking forward to about your exclusive songwriting workshop with Gotye and Adalita?
I'm always interested in another writer's process. It's rare you get to be in a room of writers and musicians and be able to talk shop for hours without feeling like a total wanker.

Tell us about the bands, producers and people in the Newcastle music community that inspire you.
Boatfriends, Birdsandbelles, the Firekites, the Seabellies, Benjamin Fraser, Kit, FK Sampler....and a bunch that we've lost to other cities, like Ballads, the Understudy, Mojo Juju, The Book of Ships...Newcastle has an incredible scene.

What’s coming up for you in 2012?
We have some exciting tours coming up, there'll be some new releases and we're pretty pumped for BigSound and the festival season. Writing. Heaps of it. Perhaps our first album.
