Interview: 1 October 2012
Tell us about your music - how did you develop your sound?
Willow Beats started a little over a year ago. I was working on a track, got Kalyani (my niece) to lay some vocals, and it worked. The contrast between Kalyani’s flowing voice and heavy bass somehow made sense to us. We both really enjoyed the process so kept making beats.

We’ve both been extremely close ever since Kalyani was born. We have a strong connection and we think it comes through in our music. I think our music definitely has a fantasy feel. We try make mystical music that transports you to a different world.

You’re one of the winners of our PARKLIFE competition. What can Parklife punters in Melbourne expect from the Willow Beats live show?
Two people having the time of they’re life on stage! Expect a bunch of electronic gatchets and Kalyani's voice soaring over the top.

What most excites you about playing and attending Parklife 2012?
Being able to play alongside some of our favorite artists! The line up is incredible!

What’s your earliest memory of seeing live Australian music?
My dad was a singer songwriter (wrote that song “Give me a Home Among the Gumtrees”) so my childhood is filled with memories of my dad playing guitar and singing.

What’s coming up in 2012?
We have an east coast tour coming up mid October. So far we’ve only played Melbourne shows so we’re looking forward to branching out.

We have a new EP on the way, which we’re very excited about. It’s definitely a level up in our production and song writing. We’re hopping to release it early 2013.

Australian music is...
...coming up in a big way! There seems to amazing new talent exploding everywhere you look, making ripples across the globe.
