The Understudy
Genre: Pop, Indie
Region: Newcastle, NSW
Members: Lucy Hearn
Artist Website: www.theunderstudy.com.au

From the dusty side streets and tall, broken buildings of Newcastle, New South Wales, here comes The Understudy. She is a songwriter with a guitar and a hat she never wears. She is young, and a little bit batty.

In August 2007, The Understudy hopped a plane, a train and a bus to Ithaca, NY. Here she conspired with the inimitable IY to make the debut LP What Not To Think While In Love. It was recorded in attics, basements and once-were-flophouses, some on the very same streets where Nabokov wrote Lolita. Made in just three weeks What Not To Think While In Love siphons the trash-talk and whispers, folk-tales and silhouettes of a year gone slightly mad into twelve shortish stories of guilt, voyeur¬ism and innocence lost.

The Understudy is turning heads both locally and further afield. The first single Fine Young Folk received airplay on Triple J, and What Not To Think While In Love has received consistently outstanding reviews including Album of the Month in Reverb Street Press.

Remarkably mature and melodic… this should garner The Understudy some national, and even international attention… or there isn’t hope for anyone. ****1/2. – Nick Milligan, Reverb Street Press

(A) hugely impressive debut...Hearn weaves beautifully crafted lyrics into timeless anecdotes. - YEN Magazine.

The Understudy has played across Australia, and in the US. She has shared the stage with Holly Throsby, Novi Split (USA), Bridget Martin (USA), IY (USA), Laura Jean, Pikelet, and The Seabellies.

The Understudy is currently nominated for several ABC 1233 Newcastle Music Awards including Best Pop 'Fine Young Folk',Best Pop 'Last Easy Day' and Best Female Vocalist.

This song is quickly climbing up my most played list on iTunes... Love it! It has this sadly optimistic quality that I love. Great tune!
