http://www.facebook.com/paulbarryfans Paul Joseph Barry, Born 7th of June 1984 is an Australian singer songwriter.
Paul’s performing started with amateur plays and musicals at a young age as well as many school performances; however it wasn’t until around the age of 16 that he started his singing and song writing. Having performed all his life on the stage, Paul took quickly to the local spotlight.
Paul had been a lover of all music his entire life, but it was the death of his brother that pushed him into singing and song writing. Paul used song writing to cope with the loss of his brother who was killed in a car accident when Paul was 15 years old.
Paul is mostly self-taught; and by the time he finished his schooling he had established his own style of both singing and song writing. Paul won several singing competitions and had performed in front of many people; however his musical endeavours were put on a hold as he went into tertiary studies.
After his tertiary studies Paul continued performing on stage and screen securing roles in some mainstream plays in Melbourne and some small parts on Australian television shows, but only played music as a hobby. It was then the persistence from Paul’s good friend Andrew Clapp that put Paul back into the music scene. Andrew pushed Paul to play his original songs in a ‘Storytellers’ Singer song writer competition in 2009. The event was the first time Paul had performed his original music since the end of his high school studies in 2003. Paul won each of his heats and the final of the competition, securing himself not only the $2000 prize but a solid start to his solo fan base.
Paul continued to perform as a solo act, supporting and alongside some well-known musicians such as Colin hay (men at work), Juke Kartel, Bobby Flynn (Australian Idol), Chris Stockily (the Dingos) and more.
Paul secured spots at the Aireys inlet and Anglesea music Festivals and was also asked to M.C at the Anglesea event. Paul began performing full time, and did a self-funded tour through victoria, New South Wales & Queensland.
After winning a song writing competition that would assist Paul in creating his first EP, Paul began thinking of putting together a band to play on the album. Before arranging this he met Jack Walters, who soon became a good friend and began drumming alongside Paul. It was obvious that the two had the connection to start a band.
Although he received some backlash from his solo fans, Paul handed his solo gigs and songs over to the band, where they began to arrange the songs in a new way to find their own sound as Nowra. Each track on Nowra’s first EP ‘A New Life’ are written by Paul and were performed originally as solo songs, however Paul hopes to Collaborate with Jack Walters and Thom Bensley on tracks for the follow up recordings.
Paul insists that every piece of music influence’s the way he writes, whether it is a band he hates or loves it can change the way he writes and inspire him. The biggest inspiration on Paul’s song writing is his life; all his songs are about people, thoughts and events from within his life. His musical influences range from Buddy Holly, Eva Cassidy, Michael Jackson & Stevie Wonder to Jeff Buckley, Rob Thomas, Brad Arnold and Ed Kowalczyk. Paul has been known to say that he loves any singer songwriter, and that nothing touches people like the truth.
