"We've come so far,the soles of my feet are wearing down. The trail we've led,the blood we've bled has stained the ground." Nicks lyrics say it all.
As of January 2009 Nick was in full time construction. Regularly gigging although not taking it too seriously. Since packing it all in and focusing on the music, and for someone who "doesn't take it too seriously" Nick has played up a storm.Headlining many big events, and supporting some big acts such as Custom Kings and Tijuana Cartel, festivals such as Surfest and coastbeats, solo tours from Melbourne to the Gold coast, and recently back from his very succesful east coast tour with the Aussie Surf Movie Festival.
His dynamic live on- stage performances leave his audience captivated! His ability to loop his guitar's and vocals raw and on the spot is incredible. “I CAN remember looking at a photo of when I was younger, about two years old. I am holding a ukulele in my nappies in the lounge room.” He laughs. But that could well have been the turning point towards a musical career for Nick Saxon, but he looks at it in a different way. “It makes me realise, we all grow up. It’s inevitable. And that particular picture reminds me that although we don’t realise it, we hold on to the things we love most,” he said. In his case, the guitar is one of them. From an early age, Saxon began writing and composing his own music, recording everything from jam sessions, to his first EP, Misdemeanours, in 2001. From travelling through Europe on tour, living in London for two years gigging, sleeping on beaches and busking for bus money, he’s travelled the hard road. And still is travelling, as far as he’s concerned. “I’m one of many artists on this journey. I have experienced highs and lows, but in comparison to those without love or hope, I am so lucky. So I won’t stop. It’s all the way, baby,” he said. All in the confined space of his bedroom, he created his own recording studio in preparation for his first album, Fireflies, which soon went on to become a very hot little album in his home town of Newcastle.
As Saxon started touring to Melbourne, Byron Bay and the Gold Coast, the album was selling fast and was soon aired on several national radio stations, with the smooth vibe of the second track, Supafly, being featured on Triple J’s roots and all, the fourth track "Frozen to the Bone" on Byrons Bay Fm, and "Fireflies" on Abc Radio..Surfing Mags such as our very own Tracks have also taken interest with some great reviews. Surfing movies and websites such as Coastalwatch and Swellnet have also taken a liking to his sounds.
A second tour back from Melbourne and Nick has been focusing his sights on the new album, "Hide and Seek".
"As all the artists know, its a lot of pressure recording. But I was lucky enough to have a friend with a studio, so it made it a really relaxed environment. Which I think reflects on the Album. I went kinda missing for a few months, I had to get into the zone, soak myself in the music. I recorded all the instruments myself, guitar, slide guitar, electric guitar, bass, keys, drums and vocals. It was tricky and very hard work. But extremely satisfying.I feel the album has displayed the changes that have occured in me and my friends around, and without my friends and family I dont think I would have come so far".
So how would you describe the new album?
"It definately has a summer feel to it, a fresh feeling." With tales from the ocean, love, urban tradgedy, heartbreak, drugs, romance and more..
An roots based funk/rock album with a twist of callipso magic, it is sure to make your top 5 playlists!
