Drew Sutherland's songs range from sparse folksy numbers to full bodied sonic journeys, and always retain a storytelling intimacy that has evoked comparisons to Augie March, Damien Rice, and Nick Drake.
Omens is a cohesive and accomplished debut album that carries the warmth and rustic charm of the Mangrove Mountain country hideaway in which it was recorded. Filled with Drew's poetic imagery and acoustic guitar, each track is fleshed out with expressive instrumentation from Syd Green (drums and dobro), Melisa Collins (violin and viola) and Bongo (bass and mandolin).
Now stepping out of his rural home in the Grampians National Park (Victoria), Drew is taking Omens on the road. Whether performing solo, with Melisa on violin, or the full Omens lineup, Drew's shows are balanced with moments of poignancy, intensity, interaction, and humour throughout.
In recent times Drew has shared stages with some of Australia's best songwriters including iOTA, Nicole Brophy, Mark Moldre, Matt Tonks, Mick Young and Eva Popov, in venues from the Wesley Anne and 303 in Melbourne to the Tea Club in NSW. He has performed live on radio, toured rural Victoria with a collective of solo musicians, embarked on his own lounge room tour, and made the Judges Highly Commended Artist list in the 2008 MusicOZ Awards.
From humble beginnings, Omens is continuing to make its way out into the world, gaining a devoted following along the way.
Tracks The Little Moments and Corners have received airplay on Triple J, Caroline Tran calling the album “a beautiful first offering”.
