GABRIEL PIRAS
Genre: Indie, Pop
Region: Melbourne, VIC
Members: Gabriel Piras
Sounds Like: Leonard Cohen, Magnetic Fields, Ben Kweller
Influences: The Velvet Underground, Cole Porter, Morphine

Gabriel Piras resides in Melbourne, and on special occasions appears at various fine establishments around town. He is sometimes accompanied by friends on other machines.

Described as “more chivalrous and intoxicating than Miguel de Cervantes’ dry as gin, tuneful cousin Pepe, the long forgotten balladeer of 16th century La Mancha!” (Shane Moritz, Beat Magazine), his songs are one minute sunny pop anthems, the next dirty swing, but always a vehicle for poignant or pointed plays on words.

Gabriel was born in Florence, Italy, but was transplanted to Melbourne at the tender age of five and three quarters. He was raised like the rest of you black wearing, coffee swilling arty tramps, and flirted with intellectualism and vice but lacked the perseverance for either. His musical heroes are fellow degenerates such as:

Billie Holiday Buddy Holly Cole Porter Descendents David Bowie Elliott Smith Hank Williams Iggy and the Stooges Johnny Cash Kurt Weill Leonard Cohen Magnetic Fields Morphine Nirvana Pixies PJ Harvey Robert Johnson Sonic Youth Television The Beach Boys The Beatles The Breeders The Clash The Cure The Kinks The The Tom Waits Velvet Underground Violent Femmes

At the tender age of seventeen, Gabriel fled Melbourne to travel the world and grow a skin, far from the debilitating scrutiny of loved ones. He lived in Europe, mainly the UK, performing extensively alone or with bands (The Splitters; Selfish Lovers; Child on Fire). After seven long years chasing the rock and roll dream, he has returned to tell tales. He currently fronts rocknrollers Red Ink Spills and plays bass in the glam-folk cabaret freak-out Plastic Palace Alice.
