The Charlie Lions began in April 2006 with an awkward suggestion of four blokes who really didn’t know one another to get together and “have a jam”. The only strand linking them together was the yearn to play some music in hope that it would fill that empty hole made when moving to the country town of Bathurst to study at Charles Sturt University, leaving their bands and musical life behind.

The Charlie Lions have since then frequently played their music around the central west developing their own unique style of funk, indie-rock with the occasional touch of Latin and folk. Their arrangement consists of Vocals, Bass, lead Guitar, Drums and percussion, trumpet and saxophone.

The individual band member’s diverse influences, experimentation and free reign within the writing process allow the sound to be original and exciting. The Charlie Lions have played under big name acts such as The Beautiful Girls, True Live, Roger That, Sirocco, Jess Maynard and played at the Village Fair Music festival in 2006 and 2007. The band’s live performances vary from a laid back acoustic style to an up beat, rocking and incredibly dance-worthy set.

To introduce the band…

On vocals and trumpet we have Patrick Neylon, aged 20 from Newport Beach who brings a background of jazz, rock, funk and sensual, emotional sensitivity to the band. Pat’s influences are Elton John, Clifford Brown, John Pennings, Ben Folds Five, Stevie Winwood, Freddie Mercury and Led Zepplin.

Angus Humphrey is the man behind the bass who reigns from Cromer and has mutated within the musical petri dishes of Primus, Pixies, Rush, Devo and Frank Zappa... oh and pat Neylon. Gus’s musical ability and humour is only surpassed by his fire crotch, stand too close to the stage and you will catch fire.

Drummer and Percussionist Will Van Trump aged 20 from Wilberforce brings Latin funk with influences from Poncho Sanchez and Ozimatli. Will has previously toured Europe in Zoo Super Band, playing at various jazz festivals and is a self proclaimed ladies man.

On Saxophone we have Scott Saxby, aged 20, from Turramurra who loves experimental rock, Metal, Jazz and Blues and is influenced by Tower Of Power, Pink Floyd, Cannonball Adderly, Dave Matthews Band and Joe Snidero. Sax always smiles…. Always... and we haven’t quite figured out why.

Finally on guitar we have Shane Funnell, aged 22 who comes from the greatest part of Sydney, Wentworthville. Shane-o’s arrogant guitar style reeks of mojo and is influenced by the likes of Patrick Neylon, Jimmy Page, John Butler, Joe Satriani, Matt Slager and Jimi Hendrix.
