Assembled from strangers in the dying days of summer in 2008, The Good China was born as a madcap musical experiment. Take a swag of instruments and some short attention spans and you get one of Melbourne’s most unique eight-piece indie pop troupes.

Band members bounce between guitars and drums, from keys to violin, from mandolin to maracas and banjo and back again. There’s no front man and no rules when The Good China take to the stage.

Their self-titled demo, recorded the same week as their debut performance in July 2008, sold a few copies, and then a few more, and is now onto its fourth pressing. The band has taken their infectious live show to Melbourne institutions like the Tote, Revolver and Ding Dong Lounge, and even ventured to Adelaide. Two hugely popular four-week residencies - first at the Empress Hotel, then at The Evelyn – brought them more acclaim and attention. Standout track ‘All Nothing’ featured on Triple J Unearthed and their hand-clapping, toe-tapping indie pop spread over the airwaves on Triple J, Triple R and SYN FM. The band has also developing an international following, thanks to a multitude of music blogs, podcasts and online radio stations from Madras to Mexico. A high-profile slot on the Air New Music Stage at St Kilda Festival 2009 won the group a cash prize and a spot on the main stage of the Festival in February 2010.

Winter 2009 saw the band squished in to Soundpark Studios with producer Steven Schram (Little Birdy, Silverchair, Little Red), emerging with their debut EP ‘Old Maps/New Roads’. The result is an exhilarating mix embracing the depth of Broken Social Scene, the quirkiness of Los Campesinos! and the raw energy of The Arcade Fire.

The band will be doing their best clowns-in-a-Volkswagen impression when they travel to Sydney and regional Victoria in late 2009. Set to thrill fans and exasperate sound engineers, The Good China won't be slowing down anytime soon.
