Calling Utopia is a pop-rock band hailing from Millicent, a small town in South Australia, and is proudly composed of sisters Sarah and Jess, along with band-mates Tom and Tony. Since forming back in 2008, Calling Utopia has put together all their efforts to perfect their Debut Album 'XIII'. Don’t let the band’s origins fool you however, their powerful rock sounds and lyrics are not your typical “small town band” tunes. The band’s rock pedigree shines through Sarah and Jess. Even at an early age, these rocking sisters showed that they have pure music gold running through their veins. With Sarah starting to sing well before she could barely talk, Jess showed the same musical passion and desire to follow in her older sister’s footsteps.
Singing in her school choir and performing solos at the ripe young age of 12, along with providing vocals for her dad’s band, Sarah had recorded two albums with the Mayfair choir by age 13. As she turned 14 Sarah started writing music and expressing her feelings and her take on life’s lessons the only way she knew how, through song.
A couple of years later when Jess was 14 herself, life changed for the youngest of the two siblings and she too turned to the one thing that seemed to make sense. Having also sung in the school choir, Jess joined up with Sarah on their first rock band endeavor, Ascender in 2006. While Ascender played gigs on and off, by 2008 the members had drifted apart and decided to call it quits.
This did not discourage the rock duo as in turn Sarah and Jess were able to express the hardships of growing up in music. Knowing that together they had a gift that many others could appreciate, these two Aussie women decided to make a difference and created Calling Utopia.
Meanwhile someone had been paying attention at a charity show that Sarah and Jess had played in as part of Ascender. In October 2008, drummer Tony walked in to the local supermarket where Sarah worked as a stock clerk and asked if the sisters would be interested in having a "Jam". Both had been working on original music and thought it would be a good opportunity to be able to start bringing their songs to life. Shortly after a couple of weeks of practice Tom re-joined with the sisters to become the final member and bassist of Calling Utopia.
The rest as they say will be history!!
