Valda is the musical creation of Dan Green that co-incidentally shares a name with the bouffant haired character of the TV soap ‘Neighbours’, who appeared on the show during the golden years of the program’s 25 year history. Apart from sharing a name though, Valda’s music bears no similarities whatsoever to the themes or characters in the show.
While Valda is primarily electronic in nature, there are obvious influences from other genres of music, movie and game soundtracks. Recordings have been compared to The Crystal Method, Nine Inch Nails, R. L. Burnside, and Shloff – the band Dan played in during the 90’s.
Valda is generally produced at Valda HQ in Perth, Australia, using a range of drum machines, samplers, and sound modules, mixed with other analogue sources using a beat extractor linked via MIDI, with recording and sequencing taken care of in Cubase. Some samples are obtained via a portable field recording rig, and occasionally Sam Fishenden stops by with some of his gear for a jam.
Future recordings at Valda HQ will see a hand-wired JTM 45 guitar amp being used for re-amping, and more guitar and bass sounds and flavours. BPM’s are changing here and there, and experiments with Master BPM Maps for a varied tempo base are inspiring some very interesting new material.
