Oblongmonster is Daniel Barry, electro songwriter and bass player in the unknown Sydney band "Champignon".
Oblongmonster has been djing for over 20 years, back in the psy trance golden days of late 1990's to early 2000's he ran with Bix (Bitchin Hot Fat) Bacon the longest running to date monthly psy trance night in Sydney featuring the cream of Sydney talent and regularly promoting new djs. And lately, in 2012 he has been at the forefront of Sonunda; yet another monthly gig, this time (and showing his ability to evolve) being focused towards the techno realm of the Australian music scene.
Over the last 10 years, Oblongmonster has written well over 100 tunes. Having released numerous E.Ps on Argentinian Label Shufflemood and Miniatura and Drag Music the latest E.P “Depths” on Ukrainian label Subself shows his maturity as a song writer. "Depths” forms an intoxicating journey by the Australian minimalist and techno exponent, Oblongmonster, utilising the great guitar talents of the versatile Jimmy Lee, this E.P has received great positive reviews from far and wide from the likes of Silva (Pesto Music), Nick Warren (Hope Recordings), Hernan Cattaneo (The Masters Series) and (a lot of) others. http://vipultima.com/promo_sheet.php?releaseId=5101
2011 had Oblongmonster working solidly on “No Object Selected”, an hour long track featuring live sax, flute, 4 guitars, bass, drums and percussion. Soon after its release in 2012, Perth radio station RTR FM showcased “No Object Selected” as their album of the week and several tracks were played on Sydney based radio station FBI’s New Weird Australia.
He has brought in the New Year at Peats Ridge Festival in Glenworth Valley for the past 3 years, as well as playing at subsonic music festival 2012. Down tempo and groovy, hyped when it needs to be, never compromising, Oblongmonster’s sets are a spaced out, decelerated psychedelic journey.
