Ruby Boots

Hailing from the west coast of Australia, Ruby Boots is one of the state’s freshest and favourite artists of late. Ruby Boots is the musical alter-ego of writer & performer Bex Chilcott. Inspired by great blues, folk and country artists from over more than five decades, Ruby Boots shapes stories of a hard-earned life and the people she’s encountered along the way. Her trademark powerful, emotive and soaring vocals fuel these stories, while the strong rhythm and melody carry listeners right along side her in the passenger seat. It’s hard not to get in and have a great ride when Ruby Boots is in full flight on the stage.

Lets wind back the clock for a moment. Sitting on the deck of a houseboat (where she worked) in the Montebello Islands just out of Exmouth, Bex started singing along with a musician workmate. Singing wasn’t enough and guitar became her weapon of choice, playing about six hours a day.

Months of isolation on the water left plenty of time and space for contemplation and eventually composition and soon simple clarity gave way to welcomed expression. Back on land, Bex headed to Perth and soon was a fixture at open mic and acoustic nights around the city. Even when she headed to work around Europe for a time, on and off deck, her guitar went with her.

Bex returned to Perth and has since intensified her performance schedule as well as carved a niche on the business side. Typical of her belief in music, Bex has built and now hosts WA’s biggest open mic night.

Despite coming into music relatively later than most, Bex is not so much making up for lost time, but rather making music for a lifetime. Ruby Boots’ songs come from real places, real experiences and real feelings, which is testament to the committed following she’s attracted since really hitting the venues, festivals and touring circuit. When you watch a Ruby Boots gig, it’s believable.

Now with two EP’s to her name, Ruby Boots has written more than an album’s worth of new material to prepare for her next recording. In the last 12 months, Bex has been travelling far and wide on a music

pilgrimage to the roots of her inspiration such as Memphis, New Orleans and Nashville while also spending time co-writing in Nashville, Utah, Melbourne and Sydney. A month of this was spent four hours out of Salt Lake City working with Vicki Thorn from The Waifs, an early major influence in Bex’s motivation to write, sing and play guitar. Already released from her adventures abroad is the single Kellie Anne recorded in Nashville with producer Robin Eaton, featuring the pedal steel of Calexico’s Paul Neihaus.

Back to the live front, Ruby Boots has had a variety of action. With or without her backing band in tow, she has carved Big Day Out, Laneway, Boyup Brook CMF, Bridgetown Blues, Nannup Music, Boddington Blues, Nukara Music, Wave Rock Weekender, West Coast Blues & Roots, Queenscliff Music, Moomba, Illawarra Folk and Tamworth into her history book. Add to that 4 of her own east coast tours and supports for Justin Townes Earle, Rev Horton Heat, Diesel, The Waifs, Oh Mercy, Wagons, Abbe May, Weddings Parties Anything, Tim Rogers, The Audreys, Adalita, Ash Grunwald, TinPan Orange and Father John Misty.

From here on in, it’s more work and more play. While her bags and guitar are ready at the door, Ruby Boots is shaping up for more national solo work than ever before, while also putting the band together for those extra extra special ones too. It’s gonna be a whole lotta fun.
