THE GREASERS
'Great Leagues' EP Bio 2008: With 'Great Leagues', Major Major set sail. Emerging from pubs and nightclubs of Melbourne where the four-piece – consisting of Adrian Slattery (vocals), Nick Taranto (guitar), James Meese (bass) and Lee Johnston (drums) – carved out a cult following since early 2006, they man the decks and travel windblown, due North into that far bigger ocean, where many perish and some survive. A perilous journey, but with sights always set on land, a warm fire and the company of friends. Because this is no longer music for one, this is for all, to be heard and sung in great chorus.
It’s been an adventurous journey for Major Major, too. Since self-releasing their debut EP late last year, they’ve twice visited the ports of Sydney and Brisbane on East Coast tours, played the Essentials Festival at the Espy, supported the likes of Yves Klein Blue and the John Steel Singers and packed out a month-long residency at the Tote in May. Not to mention picking up a stellar new bass player, James Meese, along the way. The band themselves have also been well-travelled personally, on individual journeys across Asia and the US. They are travels that have seen Major Major mature immensely, moving beyond the indie-pop, Weezer-inspired field they initially emerged out of, whilst still retaining an unyielding sense of fun, the band have taken on glorious strains of alt-country and epic rock. Most of all, though, they’ve simply grown far tighter in songwriting and playing. So now finding themselves back on Australian shores, they’ve rigged the vessel for another round.
Many have pitched in on deck – bringing on board cult engineer Nao Anzai for the second time and combining his craft with the production talents of Ground Components’ Indra Adams clearly wasn’t a mistake – everything is shipshape and yet just ragged enough where it needs to be. And the wood has been polished courtesy Roger Seibel at SAE Mastering, who’ve also mastered the likes of Pavement and Tegan and Sara. Don’t forget the chorus of friends that pitched in for the epic coda to The Beast. Because that’s just it, whilst this album might principally be the will and struggle of just four suburban boys, it is written for all to have and to hold. Come follow Major Major as they travel 'Great Leagues'.
