Ok, here’s the deal.
My name is Ryan Giles and Im 22, Bundaberg is the place that I call home as my family and friends are still their.
In winter I live in Jindabyne, playing gigs at the snow for 3 months at a backpackers resort.
six months of the year I am contracted with a couple hotels in Bundaberg and the rest of the year I spend my time traveling between Bundaberg and Sydney, busking, surfing, sharing and learning music with others.
I first started playing guitar when I was six years old and started lessons when I was eight.
Some years later I began experimenting with lyrics and melodies of my own and won a regional arts competition when I was fifteen, for best solo artist and recorded two tracks in Time Studios Rockhampton as my prize.
Later that year I moved to Bundaberg where I was to finish high school and joined a band as vocals and guitarist. We went by the name “ A Week Of Saturdays” and managed to pick up most of the support acts for Aussie bands that would come through town such as, Frenzal Rhomb, Superjesus, Machine Gun Fellatio, motor Ace and One Dollar Short.
The band split up in 2002 after the guys finished their trade and moved away for work.
I too moved away not long after and found myself in Newtown, Sydney where I lived and worked in bars.
Most nights I would walk from suburb to suburb for a spot on any open mic night where I was sometimes respected and sometimes frowned upon. After nine months I realized that the city wasn’t for me and I found myself back on the coast.
For the last few years I have been writing songs as usual and playing gigs in Jindabyne during snow season and moving up and down the coast where ever the gigs and backpackers were.
You might ask why backpackers?
I guess I would say that they are the gateway to the world and they are open to all sorts of music culture and for that I feel I have a connection with them.
This year I finally booked myself into a studio In Byron Bay. I was given a short time frame to organise the session and started freaking out when I was three weeks away from recording. I contacted my friend Ken Patterson to play drums and turntables, as he and I had played and jammed on and off for years and if anyone knew my style it was him. I had no time to find any other session musicians so I played bass and djembe also. We had nine days to put together nine songs.
The title of the E.P is “The Daily Harp” and its got a mix of traditional rhythm, blues and reggae tunes with a classic acoustic guitar sound infused with hip hop elements.
