Tasmanian folk musician Melanie Gent writes songs inspired by life - her melancholy sound blends honest lyrics with melodic acoustic guitar.

She has been a regular performer at folk events around Tasmania over the past six years, including the Cygnet Folk Festival, Franklin Apple Harvest Folk Festival and the Taste of the Huon.

As well as performing her original music, she has presented songwriting workshops alongside well known folk musicians Kate Burke, Penelope Swales, Lucie Thorne, Peter Hicks, Ian Paulin, and Mick Thomas (Weddings Parties Anything).

In September 2005 she was the only Tasmanian act to be invited to perform at the National Folk Alliance Convention in Canberra.

She has done support gigs for Australian music greats Jenny Morris and Margret Roadknight, as well as for folksters Trouble in the Kitchen and roots-men Jed Rowe and Dan Dinnen.

At this years Cygnet Folk Festival she again performed alongside renowned guitarist and songwriter Kate Burke (Kate & Ruth, Trouble In The Kitchen), who has toured extensively around Australia and overseas.

During December 2007 she released her third independent studio album, recorded in Melbourne with special guest Kate Burke and sound engineer Joe Ferguson.

In the meantime, she continues to regularly share her music with audiences at intimate venues around Hobart.
