The Modern Soul of Josh Owen
"Stellar vocal harmonies ... tasteful guitar ... slow-burning groove..... the bands natural feel always reigns supreme" Jesse Schrock, Rhythms Mag Oct 2010
Josh's effortless charm and the band's fusion of jazzy, acoustic soul seamlessly merge sun-soaked Latin riffs and off-beat percussion with wistful emotive anthemic choruses - Callum Fitzpatrick - Beat Magazine - Sept 2010
"Australia's Segovia" - Ernest Ranglin, 2009
Honed in the musical melting pot of Melbourne’s Brunswick Street, Josh’s modern day spin on spiritual soul, a melange of funk jazz soul and reggae, creates an upbeat and sensual urban soundscape that stretches the bounds of roots music.
2010 also sees the release of the prophetically titled debut studio album 'The Long Way'. Encapsulating the essential soul, funk, rock, reggae and roots influences that make up the musical chameleon that is the Josh Owen Band, The Long Way streams a sonic spread of smoothness from Josh's silky vocals and understated guitar prowess through the masterful drumming and percussion of Jason Heerah, the undeniably funky Bass of Luke Hodgson fully supported by the virtuoso of all things keyboard Jake Mason and multi-instrumental genius Dorian West.
Josh Owen has seen his first three independent releases, a live band album, a studio band EP and a solo acoustic mini-album, receive massive critical acclaim and airplay all over Australia, including Triple J, RRR, PBS, FBI, ABC 702, 774 & 891, Dig Radio, RTR, ZZZ, EdgeFM and many more. Save Me Save Me was voted 1 on Triple J’s Unearthed Roots chart and came in second in the semi-final round of UncharTed, the Tooheys Extra Dry online band comp, after being nominated as the Australian Community Radio finalist. Both band CDs have been released in Japan and a track has been released on a Brazilian surf compilation.
“The Josh Owen Band epitomise a perfect fusion of chunky riffage and feel-good soul bounce, but there is a certain something else... ” - Jesse Shrock, (live review) Beat Magazine
After hugely successful gigs at Blues at Bridgetown (WA) and then no less than five performances at Queenscliff Music Festival 2008, Josh Owen followed up with a massive summer in 2009 with performances at the second Ocean Grove Festival, The Australian Open Tennis, Globe to Globe World Music Festival, Geelong Week, A Day on the Green with Simply Red, Thin Green Line Music Festival with Xavier Rudd and a mainstage appearance at Port Fairy Folk Festival. 2009 also saw the band kick off a record breaking 8 month (and still going) residency at the world famous Espy Hotel in St Kilda, a massive national tour with Toni Childs and solo performances in all mainland states.
"The Queenscliff Music Festival 2008's wide ranging bill offered much to dip into... one discovery was Josh Owen's simmering vocals and teasing guitar lines" Andra Jackson, The Age,
The band have become festival regulars with appearances at the Pyramid Rock Festival (06/07), Apollo Bay Music Festival (07), Melbourne 2007 Cultural Festival, and performed to 20,000 at Federation Square on New Year’s Eve (06/07). Josh has toured New Zealand twice, featuring on the Soundsplash Festival in 2007, and has appeared at the Port Fairy Folk Festival, Frankston Guitar Festival, Narooma Blues Festival, Queenscliff Music Festival and Woodford Folk Festival, Swan Valley Blues & Roots Festival and The Darling Harbour Jazz & Blues Festival over the last two years. The Josh Owen Band are always spreading soulful music far and wide by touring WA, SA, Qld, NSW and Tas on a regular basis.
Josh has toured Australia and New Zealand as part of Reggae legend Ernest Ranglin's band, including the Adelaide International Guitar Festival. He was also handpicked to back Third World's lead singer Bunny Rugs during his Australasian tour and Sydney Festival shows, and has also kept up a grueling pace touring as a solo artist.
“They tick all the boxes... Brilliant, talented and oh-so-very nice... (Josh) gave everybody a masterclass in how to transfer musical skill into a decent song” .... Roadkill (live review) FasterLouder.com.au 6 June 08
