THE ECLECTIVE

In their two years together as a band, Melbourne genre-mashers Simon Wright and the Eclective have gone from being a Fitzroy Jam band to a collection of finely tuned, extremely talented musicians pumping out party vibes to their every growing loyal followers.

The Name "The Eclective" is the combination of the words Collective and Eclectic. It's hard to pigeon hole the Eclective. The energetic dance floor is always a colourful bunch. The hip hop die hards are banging their heads, The reggae crew are doin' the one drop bop and the smooth soul cats are sittin' in the pocket groove. One thing they all share in common though, is a smile from ear to ear.

Their music, an uplifting urban-jazz-and-beyond collision of hip hop, soul, funk, reggae, latin, blues and rock'n'roll always delivers one strong idea: "Fun outside of your box" like dancing in the rain.

"This is exactly the music I've always wanted to play” drummer Travis Constable has said. “It's exciting, it's colourful and man, the pocket..... but most of all it's entertaining."

The Eclective originally formed when front man Simon Wright moved from Byron Bay (NSW North coast) to Melbourne to put together his "Dream team". The Eclective's first ever gig was to a very receptive crowd at one of Melbourne's favorite hot spots "The Night Cat" earning themselves the first of many residencies at the renowned dance venue. Ever since, they have been stamping their mark on dance floors across Melbourne, Byron Bay and the Australian east coast.

Simon Wright is a product of Byron Bays surf culture and his fathers rockin' blues background. Proudly born into a left of center musical family, Simon has built a formidable reputation with three bands, The Wright Brothers, The Groove Collective and now The Eclective.

"I love music, it's my life, I'll do it forever in one way or another" says Simon. "The stage is where I'm most comfortable, and song writing is full of so many lessons, I'm a better man because of it."

In 2008, after earning themselves "a band to keep an eye on" reputation amongst the Melbourne scene, the Eclective landed themselves what was to be a lengthy and successful residency at another of Melbourne's live music hot spots "The Evelyn Hotel". The band had the oportunity to play together in front of a great audience every week for over 18 months. The bands chemistry became more involved, the song writing more inspired and the audience just kept on growing.

In this time they were picked up by several festivals as well as had an un-official release named "Live at the Evelyn" for which they sold out the launch at Manchester Lane and soon sold out of the first and only pressing. Deciding to go with a studio EP rather than pressing another order of the "Live at the Evelyn" was how the Eclective found themselves in the studio for the first time. Recruiting Ivan "Choi" Katchoyan (True Live, TZU, Cooking on three Burners) as producer the Eclective put together a five track gem, outlining perfectly what they had achieved so far, again selling out the launch, only this time back on their now well established home turf "The Evelyn Hotel".

The track your hearing now is the opening track for SW&theE's debut studio release.
