For all intents and purposes, Arts Martial have just spent half of their existence in a recording studio.

Within the first nine months of being a band, Arts Martial jumped out of nowhere to become one of the most in-demand live acts in Perth – notching up coveted supports and festival appearances in their first handful of shows. A groundswell of punters made each show bigger than the last, and critical acclaim followed shortly thereafter. A debut EP, an encouraging amount of airplay, and Arts Martial were on the map. And, from that attention, the band found themselves in the company of producer Tom Larkin (Shihad, Calling All Cars).

The first slice of the forthcoming album – Running – is a sign that all of the sleep deprivation (and Larkin’s fastidious reach for perfection) has paid off. The song, quite beautifully, sounds the way Arts Martial sound on stage. And it is this larger-than-life sound that typifies what Arts Martial do best: write pop songs so they are, in fact, rock songs.

With an ever-present illusion of effortlessness, Arts Martial deliver their music with such precision and weight that everything they do, even a breezy feel-good song like Running, has an edge to it. Some beef.

Led by the unmistakable voice of Jarrod Ross; Arts Martial, for all this apparent pop simplicity and convention, are a remarkably unique-sounding band. They play songs with verses and choruses, on instruments no more uncommon than guitars and drums, but there is a certain extra something in their music. Something distinctly their own that makes their music more than just the sum of its parts.

And while it was put to tape in the dead of winter, Arts Martial’s debut album is absolutely ripe for summer. But coming from a band of best mates who all live beside the beach, how could it not be.

So in the context of the album to come, Running is that first turn in the weather when things finally start warming up again, the sky is a little less cloudy, and the ocean beckons with the same refreshing chill as an afternoon beer.

It is the soundtrack to feeling good.

I love how you guys ditch the bells and whistles to get straight to the butt-kicking rock and crystal hooks.
