Sophisticated, sensual and romantic, Nicola Milan’s music represents a new sound in the Australasian jazz landscape. With songs that sit in-between the sultry cool of Melody Gardot and the elegance of Diana Krall, this Australian singer/songwriter captivates with her unique, velvety vocals and thought provoking melodies.
From infectious Latin rhythms and soaring ballads to bluesy swing and folk, Nicola’s music is passionate and enriched with a web of emotive lyrical content over a broad palette of improvisation and as exotic as her Welsh/ Anglo-Indian heritage.
“I write the lyrics and melody at the same time. It starts with an emotion and the song builds itself from there” Nicola says of her songwriting methods. It has been noticed how well crafted her work is; beautiful phrases and skilled arrangements which immerse the listener in the message of each story.
After the release of her debut EP ‘Little Rendezvous’ in November 2011, Nicola’s composition "The Chapter You Wrote In My Life" placed in the top ten for the prestigious Australian Songwriting Competition run by the Australian Songwriters Association and the EP gained radio play extensively on Australian Community Radio and in the USA and UK.
Since graduating from the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (W.A.A.P.A) in 2008, Nicola’s has had her single “Take Your Chances” featured in the movie length feature film “The Kittens of Woodlake” and in 2010 she wrote the theme song for the popular web series “Flatmates.”
Despite maintaining a busy schedule singing jazz for corporate shows and weddings, in 2011 she performed her own compositions for the United Nation’s “UN Women” and lent her vocals to Sugar Blue Burlesque’s “Black Market Cabaret.” Nicola has performed at festivals including the Fremantle Festival, World Championship Festival in Western Australia and at the Wangaratta Jazz Festival in November 2012.
This year Nicola was awarded a $9,750 grant from the Department of Culture and the Arts WA to record her debut full length album “Forbidden Moments” which is due for release on 10 May. The result of two years of Nicola’s songwriting work, the album boasts an incredible line up of musicians and the release will be followed by a national tour in December.
Nicola is also an award winning cartoonist, published author and poet. In the 2011 Rotary Cartoon Awards “Women on the World” competition Nicola took out an award for her cartoon about women and the glass ceiling. 2012 saw Nicola complete a publicity tour in the UK for her new book “Monster in Law: A Survival Guide” co-authored with Judy Davies and published by Pegasus Elliot MacKenzie Publishers, UK. Nicola has also competed in the Australian Poetry Slam Competition for poets and writers that perform their work.
