As soon as Tinpan Orange’s new single, Over The Sun, begins I cannot help myself from swaying the head and smiling widely. Within seconds the beat has me rolling on my ankles like a sixties, acoustic, pop tune would. It’s not that the piece doesn’t have a modernistic feel – indeed, the production value and themes fit today wonderfully. Still, there is a quality to the instrumentation and sassy vocals that also seem periodic to the origins of pop. In fact , the second verse has the band craftily referencing the Velvet Underground, with “that song from that guy from” (thus the iconic band’s name proceeds) “playing again”. It is a daring attempt, yet the band executes this mention eloquently.
The phonetic melody also seems a tribute to the past. Starting with, “some days just fly away, I had two birds on my wrist,” one is filled with a sense of dreamy light and warmth. The story is optimistically remembered you might say too, yet if you listen closely to the lines there is a dirty, almost sexy, fringe to the piece. References such as “like a cowboy who’s made his escape” and “you used to smoke cigarettes” create an edge for this upbeat, playful song. The depth to Over The Sun is then revealed, ensuring that this is not just another cute number for the charts. The wisdom is it’s catchy melancholia. Sure enough, you feel the movements of going bother “under,” then “over the Sun” throughout the single’s duration.
Tinpan Orange have been together for several years starting as a simple sister/brother duo. Now the band has five members, all of extraordinary talent.
So far, as each album of theirs has been released, their lyrical and musical content continues to evolve to greater, and more exciting levels. I have much faith in their future!
