Split Seconds
Genre: Indie, Pop
Region: Perth, WA
Members: Sean Pollard - Vocals, Guitar. Rhys Davies - Guitar, Vocals. Ben Golby - Keys, Vocals. Jack T - Drums, Vocals. Vaughan Davies - Bass, Vocals.

If Split Seconds were a football team their preseason preparation for the 2012 musical year could only be described as impeccable.

In the past 18 months the critically-lauded, all-singing Perth quintet have won five WAMi Awards including Best Indie Pop Act, toured the country with The Panics, Jebediah and Owl Eyes and made their presence known at major festivals including Homebake, Pyramid Rock, Southbound, Big Day Out, St Jeromes Laneway Festival and BigSound.

After Richard Kingsmill famously declared in 2010 that they were his “new favourite Perth band” their singles All You Gotta Do and Bed Down have gone on to become high rotation favourites on Triple J, turning thousands of fans onto a classic Australian indie pop sound in the tradition of The Triffids and The Go Betweens.

Split Seconds now stare down 2012 armed and ready with new single Top Floor and a soon- to-be-released debut album, which reveals a group comfortable and ready for the big stage.

Top Floor is the last song born out a prolific writing streak frontman Sean Pollard struck upon while living in London and working an unusual job at the Priory rehab hospital. His distance from home (not to mention the strange surrounds of his workplace) gave birth to the insightful musings on Australian suburban life that made Split Second’s self-titled debut EP so popular.

While the specifics incidents that inspired Top Floor are rather X-rated, let’s just say that one night on his way back from work our intrepid traveller was alarmed by a couple enjoying themselves a little too much on the top floor of one of London’s aptly-named Routemaster buses.

In typical ‘Splits’ fashion, the song takes a personal twist and raises more questions than answers. Musically, it brings to mind Blur at their jaunty, beat-driven best and the urgent, gritty excitement of Spoon

Top Floor is the last of Pollard’s ‘London songs’ with the rest of the band’s debut You’ll Turn Into Me (released July 7) dealing with the thud of returning home, and the reassessment of old and new relationships – featuring a revolving, somewhat mysterious cast of characters.

Spending hours on the road with Perth pop stalwarts like Jebediah and The Panics has also rubbed off on the band’s brilliant debut which sees them take the torch and continuing WA’s reputation for jangly pop and widescreen sonic experimentalism of the highest order.

Ahh, brilliant. A lovely melody with some stirring harmonies backing up the action. "There's a Magnum in the sink" is a winning line. Congrats!
