The Cuckoos first album draws on blues, folk, country, and even punk roots to deliver an edgy and organic pop/rock sound. The band’s focus is clearly on the song as a vehicle for storytelling, picture painting, and protest.
Graeme Forsyth explores the varying resonances of an acoustic cornucopia, and lays them down in strong lacework patterns, weaving textures filled with flickering other-worldly colour.
Alastair Wallace rides through this sonic landscape with electric flair, creating instantly memorable, soaring melodies and stabbing punctuations of impressionist noise. Screaming fingers of light describe an angel descending or a jet spiralling to an explosive end. It is in this light and dark forest of guitars that the Wolf spins his stories of pain, loss, victory, despair, and hope.
‘An Angel Lies Bleeding’ was written five years ago at the very start of the ‘shock and awe’ invasion of Iraq when an unknown number of civilian deaths occurred (www.iraqbodycount.org).
Blues-inspired ‘Reaper Man’ tells the semi-autobiographical tale of survival from a life in the fast lane that nearly crashed fatally into the barrier.
‘Through Your Looking Glass World’ warns of an uncomfortable end to a fictional (?) society hooked on consuming endless disposables for instant gratification. Not only unsatisfying, but meaningless and ultimately unsustainable.
What has this got to do with the moon? The moon looks down on the Earth, and wolves howl at the moon. There are more connections, but find out for yourself as you listen to Tell the Moon Not to Cry.
