Unearthed Artists We Like: The Rocks Cut

The Dead Heads are a mid-fi bands hailing from the southern outskirts of Sydney. They were formed sometime between ’01 and ’09 by two brothers Oscar and Ali Jeffery in the small country town of Bowral. In 2009 Oscar and Ali moved to Sydney in the way of sleeping on peoples couches and testing as many friendships as they could. They starting racking up noise complaints along St Johns Road in Glebe with their trashy garage tunes pumping from a garage, as one policeman put it “[loud enough to hear the music] 3 blocks down the F#%$ing road!”. With the help of Ferg Davison, Oscar and Ali developed a sound and a knack for songwriting, which they continue to refine and develop.

The band found many of its members through random encounters with estranged schoolmates and estranged strangers that are now not strangers. Chance meeting of Kern on the bus provided them with the first practice with drums, they conned the guitarist Roberto from school into drumming for the band, found a tambourine player at 3am in Lansdowne who happened to come from the southern highlands, and live just up the road from Oscar and Ali.

In 2009, with only just enough material to play a 20minute set, they entered and won the Sydney Uni Band comp. They had only bee playing together for 4 months and realized that band comps are OK. You do get some money if you win. They probably weren’t ready for the win, as they were still finding their style and sound, but it was nice!

By 2012 Oscar and Ali had roped in the right combination of people and after successful filings for adoption, the undynamic songwriting duo were joined by the cosmic force of guitarist turned drummer Roberto Klaic, person turned percussion Matte Vancouver, and the other guy Josh.

Since then they play only one old song and have equipped themselves with more material that exists in the universe. They have recorded and are about to release two albums, a culmination of what has been happening over the past two years, particularly since the beginning of 2012. The albums show their love for good music. That’s all it is, good music. They play an eclectic mix of 60’s hippie flip to 90’s scrungy grungy pop grunge, quite loud at gigs!
