“Long gone are the days when Timothy Nelson was simply a precocious talent; the guy has moved into an entirely different echelon. He sounds like Stevie Wonder smoking gospel Beatles-crack. He thinks big, and he gets results. It’d be a bit of a stretch to call him a pop rock’n’roll genius this early in his career, but the guy demonstrates vision and talent beyond the ken of most of his peers.” – Xpress Magazine

Since emerging in 2007 Timothy Nelson And The Infidels have racked up a staggering quartet of awards for WAM Song Of The Year and are hitting the road yet again in support of latest single ‘Mary Lou’, the 2nd to be lifted from their forthcoming sophomore album.

Produced by Joel Quartermain [of Eskimo Joe], and mixed by Steve Schram [San Cisco, Vasco Era, The Cat Empire, Eagle And The Worm] ‘Mary Lou’ shows Timothy’s knack for a lush sonic landscape and killer hook is ever present.

‘Mary Lou’ marked a first for Timothy, who wrote the chorus in Santa Cruz and the rest in downtown Willetton, WA. Having jammed the song out in a rehearsal space with the whole band between shows in Melbourne, taping parts on mobile phones to work up the track, Timothy later played the demo to producer Joel Quartemain. Excited by the bounce and flow of the rough version they decided to get stuck right into realising the song properly. Says Timothy, “Joel became like a seventh member of the band as we worked on it and it was one of the most fun times I've had in a studio… it was pretty funny, Hayley [Jane, violin], Jozef [Grech – guitar] and myself were all trying to reach those high Bee Gees-esque notes together. Sometimes it sounded like a kettle boiling. We then went out for lunch at some point and saw on the news the Bee Gees' childhood home had burnt down; that was a bit eerie.”

It’s important not to put this pop in a Bee Gees box though: Nelson and his band have supported artists as diverse as Cosmo Jarvis, Birds Of Tokyo, Hoodoo Gurus, Eskimo Joe, Katie Noonan, Lior, The Audreys, Clare Bowditch and Jeff Martin (The Tea Party) since releasing their widely anticipated debut album I Know This Now in 2011. Its singles ‘Nothing’s In Tune’ and ‘You Don’t Know What You’re Waiting For’ received significant national airplay. Media across the country sung the album’s praises before Nelson himself was honoured with an Outstanding Achievement In Songwriting Award in The Great American Song Contest – notable as he was the only non-American winner in the category.

All following, of course, Timothy’s recognition with WAM’s Song Of The Year award for ‘Overcast Day’ [2007], the success two short years later with 2009’s ‘Sleeping Alone’, and again in 2011 with ‘Speak The Truth In Love’, which picked up Song Of The Year gongs in two categories including the big one.

Upon the conclusion of the I Know This Now tour, the vast majority of 2012 was spent writing the upcoming [and as-yet-unnamed] album, and touring on the back of lead single ‘Talk’. Recruiting Jozef Grech [guitar, backing vocals, keys] to the band officially after the I Know This Now tour, the now-six piece have a newly layered sound and are ready to hit the ‘Mary Lou’ road:

“Strong song-writing is something that is well and truly pushing up daisies but it’s ‘hot meal on a cold day’ efforts like this that fill me with a little hope. Expect more from this man.” - spaceshipnews.com

Mary Lou
rating:  4/5
This song is pretty wonderfully bombastic. Bee Gee's high harmonies, catchy as pop hooks and just a whole bunch of fun. I subscribe.

I love, love, love this song. Rollicking folky goodness, smooth and unassuming. Nelson's vocals are stellar, and fairly unique in a competitive genre...
