Describe your music
I like when people hear it and struggle to summarize it. Some of it I guess slots nicely into a category, i.e. ‘psych-pop’ or ‘folk’ or the like but in general what we’re doing at any one time is influenced by what we’re listening to at that time.. ‘Country’, ‘blues’, ‘60s psych’. It’s all in there!

How do you go about writing a song? Lyrics or music first?
Writing both together feels like it gets the best results. The trick is to try get it all done as fast as possible for me, that way you don’t lose sight of what appealed to you about the hook or riff or whatever in the first place. It’s way too easy to keep working on it and polish out all the things that attracted you to it in the first place.

Who would you most like to tour with or learn from as a songwriter?
Glenn Richards or Matt J Tow of Lovetones. They both just seem to get on with it and churn out amazing songs every time. I want to know where their ideas for the production of their songs come from. I’ve heard Glenn writes best when hungover, and I don’t debate the logic in that. -feeling shitty and awful has worked pretty well so far for a lot of songwriters.

What was the last CD you bought? what made you buy it?
Belles will ring have had a record out for a little while that I only just picked up. Got some real pretty melodies in there and they like their Rickenbackers too. I don’t think it quite holds up to their live show though which is a mighty good one.

What do you do when you're not making music?
I’m a dull person outside music, not a desirable one at all. You’ll generally find me on my veranda in my rocking chair and old man blanket.

What have you got planned for the future?
The Polites are continually recording. These recordings will be packaged and released. I thought of adding more members to continue the trend (Polites have multiplied from 2 piece to 5 in a matter of weeks) though I think 5 is enough for now. I’ve a bit of a soft spot for gigging too you see. The plan is to get out there a little more often over the coming year and hopefully make a bit of a name for the band.

Australian music is...
A good thing. You can relate to it. Anyone who has an inferiority complex over it is forgetting that.
