Interview: 19 May 2008
Describe your music
Essentially it is the songwriting of Dominic Byrne, in particular the songs that fall into the “anything other than Little Red” basket, so it ends up being a rather eclectic mix. If we had to be more specific, well, here we go: The music is on the darker side of a happy good time, with a mouthful of devil may care doo-wop and loose do-it-yourself voodoo. Haha.
What made you making music?
I’m sure I can speak for all of us as individuals if I say we would be institutionalized or dead if we couldn’t be creating music. As far as THE GREASERS go, to cut a long story short: Dom found himself in all kinds of trouble regarding unfulfilled obligations and was facing the menacing task of having to perform a solo show of his originals at the Arthouse as the opening act to two avant-grindcore bands. To help weather the storm he enlisted the Sam Raines (drums/bv’s) and myself (bass/bv’s), and against all common sense and rational thought it happened to stick.
Do you play many gigs?
It is very on/off. Due to Dom’s commitments with Little Red, and my various extraneous musical commitments it isn’t easy to gig regularly. It is typical to have a month long drought and then a burst of 4 in a week.
Who is Shelly? Is she a real person?
Wouldn’t you like to know…Though I did hear that she likes to go out on a Saturday night.
Where do you record most of your stuff?
We completed an album last year that was recorded in Dom’s living room on to a 4 track tape player with the assistance of Steven Schram, the engineering extraordinaire (the songs posted on this website are from the same session). The CD launch is on May 29 at Pony (Melbourne CBD).
What's your favourite piece of equipment?
My upright bass.
What was the last CD you bought? what made you buy it?
White Boyz Can’t Funk’s Some of us. They are great friends and a great band. Vote for them.
What do you do when you're not making music?
Listen to it..
What's the best thing you've done so far musically in your opinion?
We have churned out over 35 songs in under a year and we all have our own favourites, but the most important thing is to relish the process of creating music. Nothing beats huddling around the piano on a cold evening with a few beers and a drop of moonshine twisting and bending a song into shape until it is just right.
What have you got planned for the future?
A lot more songs, a lot more gigs and many more good times.
