NSW Parklife winners, One Glove, are in their own genre known as - EPICTRONICA. They are pop songs, they are rock songs, they are dance songs, and they are electronic songs. But above all, they are loud, wide and off the hook
Interview: 9 September 2008
Tell us about your music, how did your sound develop?
Mooky and I have been playing in indie-rock bands Days Like Stars and Saving Grace (both on unearthed) for some time, before I decided to delve into the world of electronic music I'd always been writing chillout-style tunes on my computer but was never ready to really release it into the wild. It was only until my old friend Mooky came along that I realised these tracks could be worked into something a bit more substantial. We jammed, tweaked, polished, drank beer, and went clubbing, and out came One Glove…
Tell us about your live show - what can the Parklife audience expect?
We've both been on the stage since we were 10 years old so playing live is something that is very important for us to be doing. Mooky's vocal diversity is really something to behold, he could hold an audience just on his own. So I think it's a combination of these incredible soaring vocals, some stomach-wrenching bass lines, and a banging live drum kit that really make it happen live. It's very loud and very epic.
Who are you most looking forward to at this year's Parklife?
I love Goldfrapp, they had a big influence on a lot of the earlier more chilled tunes I wrote, and I think that some of those retro pads and synths that they use can be heard in One Glove songs.
I'm also so excited to see Soulwax. I remember seeing them at Big Day Out a few years ago and my mind was blown wide-open to what you can do with electronic equipment. They are mad scientists when it comes to concocting a killer dance/electronic track. Also, Grafton Primary we're one of the reasons we started playing this type of music, so it's going to be great seeing them on a big stage as opposed to a dirty little nightclub (although I do like a dirty little nightclub every now and then).
What's planned for the future?
We're going to get a few of our tracks re-recorded and actually released (we haven't released anything yet) since we're still using tracks recorded in my bedroom! And thanks to JJJ airplay, we've had a lot label and agency interest so hopefully we can score some more slots on a few more festivals! Plus we're really keen to start working on our alcoholism and drug addictions. What?
Australian music is?
… sounding very healthy at the moment. It seems as though more and more electronic originals acts are starting to pop up (like us) which has injected a fresh burst of life into the local scene too. And I don't think I've heard better bodies of work than the Presets' Apocalypso and PNAUs' new record. Also, It's good to see Australian Idol's ratings drop because it means people are actually realising that Australian music isn't just about copying what other artists do or being able to sing 4 octaves.
