Interview: 15 June 2010
Tell us about your approach to song writing.
I'm not one those super disciplined songwriters who treats it like a job and hides away 9-5 each day. That said, I really admire people who do that. For me, songwriting's more like awkward and impulsive teenage love. It usually begins with a single lyric, which often becomes the first line of the song, or part of the chorus. Then, with equal parts daydreaming, humming and autism, the songs tend to get written fairly quickly. Generally, wearing the ugliest, most comfortable thing you own is a good omen too. There's no formula or time-tested strategy. I just keep mucking around at the piano until things click. And, if they don't, I cuss, make a coffee and listen to something other than myself for a bit.

What are you hoping to get from the Unearthed Song writing workshop?
I've mostly written songs by myself, so the greatest thing is to simply chat with others about how songwriting works for them. You don't want to over-talk anything and mine it to buggery. That said, it's definitely helpful to swap ideas. Julian, Kevin and Megan are such versatile songwriters, you'd be stupid not to listen to what they have to say. Plus, I'm really loving listening to tunes by the other unearthed winners, so I'm looking forward to hearing what's on their minds too.

How are you most looking forward to hearing speak at Song Summit?
There are some songwriting sessions that look fantastic, but it's often the stuff you don't predict or plan for that ends up being the best. And that mostly just comes from being able to hang out.

What’s coming up in the future?
Album numero uno - Fail Like You Mean It - out sometime August, with a tour to match (Sept/Oct).

Australian music is?
We're pretty lucky to have such a knock-out set of songwriters in our family tree: Paul Kelly, Grant McLennan, Robert Forster, Dave McCormack, Quan Yeomans, Nick Cave, Tim Rogers, Glenn Richards, Slim Dusty (yes, that's right - he's a fricken legend), Sia Furler, Holly Throsbucket, Sally Seltmann, and more recently Megan Washington, Kate Cooper, Chris Pickering and Fergus Brown. There are plenty more - but they're ones who stand-out for me immediately. We're also downright lucky to have a music-devoted public radio station - triple j - that's dedicated to new and interesting Australian tunes. It's easy to take that for granted, but the fact is, there's no other equivalent anywhere on earth... and that is genuinely awesome.
