Interview: 25 June 2012
Tell us about your music - how did you develop your sound?
My music is very personal to me. Every song has a story. It’s pop music that uses a mash of electronic and organic sounds. I started off playing jazz and blues; Piano based stuff. It wasn’t until the latter part of my teens that I was influenced by experimental and electronic sounds. I remember hearing my older brothers friend remixing a Bjork track for a party, this was when I started to be drawn into the synthetic world. Electronic music has slowly merged together with my organic roots. I’ve always experimented with production and, to some degree; this music has been in my mind for a while. It’s just taken some time to be able to articulate it to everyone else.

What’s the Phebe Starr live show like?
I have a huge band. Two drummers, a bass player, 2 synths, keys and a back up singer who has sweet dance moves and is awesome at tambourine! I try to recreate that huge sound live, however, still keep it intimate because it’s all about the songs and the stories. Occasionally I play solo, which is a completely different experience- stripped back with a sampler and synth.

You’re a "J-Pop junkie"? How did that develop? How does it influence your music?
J- POP JUNKIE?! I wouldn’t go that far but there is defiantly a part of me that has been inspired by it. Occasionally I’ll throw in a reference i.e. Maneki Neko is a track I wrote about training a cat. I have always been drawn to the quirky clothes and culture. A few years ago I randomly purchased a CD I liked the look of by a Malaysian/Chinese artist called ‘ALIVE’. It blew my mind with the huge traditional orchestral sounds, mixed with bubblegum pop. I wanted to emulate it in my own way.

What’s the best advice you’ve been given and who was it from?
"Under promise, over deliver" – Mum

What’s coming up in 2012?
