Tom Rule wears waist-coats, sings and plays guitar. There’s more to this young son of Melbourne, but that’s the gist. His raw, acoustic/alternative sound bears hints of Britain’s Ben Howard and the melodic simplicity of Canada’s City and Colour. Between a haunting voice and the picks, plucks and strums that make up much of his music, Tom’s folk/indie influences are unmistakable but not overbearing.


Tom was born in Melbourne, Australia and grew up in Monbulk in the leafy hills of the Dandenong Ranges, on the fringe of Melbourne. His backyard was the mountain ash and creeks of this temperate rain forest on the edge of the Great Dividing Range.

Both his parents were musical and his love of guitar and voice likely came from his father who played in bands in his youth. Tom took piano lessons for 7 years until his mother bought him a guitar when he was 12. Lessons in classical guitar followed and it was while specialising in music subjects at Box Hill Senior Secondary College that Tom discovered his voice and love of performing.

At nineteen Tom has released his first recording, a five track EP recorded at home in a small studio built with help from friends and neighbours. All the songs are self-penned, emotional journeys performed with guitar and voice in just a few takes.
