It's funny how baked beans draw people together. Despite being written in Sweden and his hometown of Perth, Western Australia, it took a bitter London winter and a baked bean dinner date with an inspiring honky-tonk pianist to bring Davey Craddock to record his debut EP, Introducing Davey Craddock. Recorded in 2009 in London producer Oscar Cainer's Muswell Hill studio, Introducing Davey Craddock warmly captures the songwriter's folk, blues and alt-country leaning material being swept along by a dusty bar-room backing of double bass, banjo and piano.
A year spent in Sweden studying music and living with an opera singer first inspired Craddock to write. Stuck inside on account of the country's famously short and cold winter days, he amassed a steady pile of 4-track demos. After striking a deal with the principal of a Gothenburg music school to sit in on English lessons in return for studio time, Craddock was soon experimenting and recording almost daily in a well-appointed school studio thanks to the joys of Swedish socialism. Following snow-capped pub gigs and a wobbly show on a Baltic cruise liner, Craddock headed home to Perth in 2004 to continue playing to whoever would listen.
Since returning to Australia with his flat-pack of pine-scented songs, Craddock has played regular and well-received solo shows and has shared the stage with some of Western Australia's finest songwriting talent including Abbe May, Felicity Groom, Jeff Strong and Justin Walshe. A recent trip to Nashville also allowed Craddock to test his material on some of the harshest critics around at the Bluebird Cafe's iconic writers' night.
Mastered at King Size Sound in Chicago by Mike Hagler (Wilco, Calexico, Billy Bragg, Neko Case), Introducing Davey Craddock has the lo-fi warmth, clarity and intimacy befitting Craddock's honest and conversational style.
RTR FM Local Feature Album, March 2010
“Memorable and personal, Introducing Davey Craddock is a class act.” Drum Media
“Craddock's upbeat ballads waver between meditative half-singing and chesty vocal bursts with enough meat in them to bring the microphone near to distortion. He's skilled but not plastic.” Faster Louder Australia
