Unearthed Artists We Like: Pete Donohue , James and the Sidebottom Band


Helsinki is a four-piece psychedelic folk rock band, based in Ballarat and Melbourne, Victoria.

Formed in 2002, the band has just announced the release of its long-awaited debut album, August. August is a kaleidoscopic 12-song rollercoaster ride of indie-inflected rock, folk, blues and psychedelia written, for the most part as a continous piece of music rather than a collection of 'singles' and 'filler'.

The band is made up of 4 members, Tom Caley (vocals, guitar), Brendon Pyers (guitar, vocals), Aaron Bell (bass) and Jon Edwards (drums). Formed in 2002 by Tom, Brendon and Jon Helsinki was originally a 3-piece, before Aaron was recruited on bass to allow it to develop a more expansive sound. This culminated in the writing, recording and releasing of August, a record over 14 months in the making. August was entirely self-funded and recorded largely in Brendon's home studio which gave the band immense freedom when attempting to capture the 'right' versions of the songs and gives the whole album an extremely personal and emotional feel.

After beginning its life in Tom's spare room on an old 4-track recorder borrowed from Brendon, through to endless jams whilst the members became at ease with the songs to the countless (literally) hours Brendon and Tom spent, fuelled by curry and "experimental" beers nailing the parts once Jon and Aaron had recorded the rhythm tracks August is steeped in emotional importance for all Helsinki's members. Now the album is readily available it has truly been 'born' and Helsinki just hope that as many people get to hear it as is possible.
