Scarlett Affection have just received an Honorary Songwriting Award from the 9th Annual Great American Song Contest for their song Denouement. They were also featured in The Weekend Australian Magazine in the Foreword March 15th-16th and played a gorgeous show at The Vanguard in Newtown, Sydney. They also played live to air on ABC and had their first dalliance into the world of TV with an appearance on State Focus, Channel Ten which was a fabulous experience and quite hilarious! Scarlett Affection returned from four fabulous shows in January at the Illawarra Folk Festival in Bulli, NSW. What a blast - folk legends, extraordinary songwriters congregating in the rain, beautifully attentive and appreciative audiences - what a weekend!

SCARLETT AFFECTION have just completed their Southern Spring Sojourn which included a series of shows in Sydney, Canberra and beyond. Scarlett Affection would like to thank the Australia Arts Council for their generous assistance and all the lovely people they met on the road!

SCARLETT AFFECTION has just been awarded an Industry Directory prize courtesy of IMMEDIA! Check out the Scarlett Website for more exciting news!

SCARLETT AFFECTION have recently returned from a fabulously successful debut tour of Northern America. They were invited to perform several shows across the country including shows in Memphis, Tennessee; The Knitting Factory in New York City and three great shows in Toronto as part of Canadian Music Week and the Pitter Patter Music Festival.

Scarlett Affection launched their debut full length record locally, prior to their departure, with a sell out Showcase Soiree at the Bangalow A & I Hall. The event was also a successful fundraiser for their trip overseas, and was made possible by the assistance and support of the entire Bangalow community and the greater Byron Shire.

THE SCARLETT STORY

SISTERS...

Melia and Nerida grew up in Sydney before moving to Tasmania. Both classically trained, Melia and Nerida began writing songs and performing them illegally (aged 17 and 13 respectively) in pubs and at various concerts in Hobart under the guise of Sis. Their popularity grew and they were Unearthed on Triple J and played a packed out concert at Hobart’s Theatre Royal.

Not long after, Nerida packed her bags for the sunny shores of Byron Bay where she locked herself in a studio to study Composition at Southern Cross University, Lismore. Meanwhile Melia pursued her passion for the stage with an acting degree at the Victorian College of the Arts, Melbourne.

THE SOLO STORY...

Melia has her A.Mus.A in piano and studied classical piano and composition at the Conservatorium of Music in Hobart, but deferred to compose and perform with Sis. After completing her degree in Acting (Bachelor of Dramatic Art at the Victorian College of the Arts), Melia has been in several short films. ‘Fish’ was recently screened at the Melbourne Film Festival. She has toured the country with the Bell Shakespeare Company and worked extensively with the Playbox Theatre Company in Melbourne. She even made it to the big screen in a spicy ‘Doritos’ commercial. Simultaneously Melia performed solo and in various bands within the Melbourne music scene.

Nerida studied Composition at Southern Cross University, Lismore. She has recorded vast amounts of material including songs, film music, jingles, music for theatre performance, pop songs and electronic ambience. Nerida was one half of the melodic/electronic outfit ‘Headspace’ who walked away as finalists in the 2002 Music Oz Awards with their song ‘Quietly Craving’. She was involved in the Talent Development Programme in Sydney which culminated in a performance of her song ‘Why?’ at the Sydney Opera House. She has written scores for music and dance and has studied flute, piano and voice.

SCARLETT SYNERGY...

Seven years later, Melia rocked up on Nerida’s doorstep and demanded a house key. After some squabbling and songwriting tug-of-war, the sisters reunited musically and got stuck into the pre-production for Nerida’s final uni project. After several midnight to dawn sessions, the girls realised this was more than an end of semester portfolio; this was in fact an EP. And so ‘Laced’ was born and 500 copies of the recording were printed. Now armed with a CD, Scarlett Affection gigged extensively accruing fans wherever they are seen. The Northern Rivers region of NSW, Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Sydney and Melbourne.

Scarlett Affection played the East Coast Blues and Roots Festival 2005 and were seen at Woodford Folk Festival last year. Supported widely by community radio and nationally on Triple J, Scarlett Affection had to re-print another 500 CDs to cope with the growing demand for their original songs. Their live set is a theatrical, raw yet polished performance that leaves audiences with spine-tingles, smiles and cleverly crafted stories.

Together they have won: ‘Best Track’ in the Pocket Rocket Band Competition, Byron Bay; Queensland’s Face the Music Competition, ‘Best New Recording Talent’ at the NCEIA Dolphin Awards and to top it off they were awarded an Australia Council Grant for an East Coast Tour to promote ‘Laced’ and to expose their music to their ever-expanding audience. They were also the proud recipients of a 2007 Australia Arts Council Grant for the Presentation & Promotion of 'Our Sweet Ambush'.

Scarlett Affection was invited to perform at the Opera House, Sydney as a showcase performance. They were also invited to showcase at Trackdown Studios, Fox Studios, Sydney.

Scarlett Affection's debut full length record 'Our Sweet Ambush' is now available from www.scarlettaffection.com
