Unbeknownst is a recording collective based in Adelaide, South Australia. We produce a variety of jazz- and blues-influenced music designed for radio play, and use in film and television.
The main members of Unbeknownst are:
Stephen McKenzie (composition, instrumentation, samples). Stephen is the songwriter, producer, and driver of Unbeknownst. Stephen was in cult Adelaide anti-folk band The Bedridden in the early 90s, as well as prog-rock band Stinky Texta in the same era. Later he went solo and won the South Australian State Song-Writing Contest in the year 1995, following up with Best Instrumental two years later. After completing an English PhD, he returned to music, and now concentrates on song-writing, arranging and recording.
Lee Pfitzner (vocals). Lee is a well-known figure in the Adelaide live music scene. Her voice suits many styles and she has performance and recording experience with string quartets (the Zepyhr Quartet), soul bands (Jayne-Anne Power, Supernova), tribute bands (Taylor Made), and a cappella ensembles, as well as her own jazz outfit, the Lee Pfitzner Trio. She enjoys challenging, original music equally as much as she likes bringing new meaning and expression to established music.
Our main release is the six-track EP, Quicksand. The songs are:
• Quicksand – A jazz-influenced tune with dark vocals and a neat, catchy bass line.
• Bring Out Your Dead – A slow blues tune with wide dynamics. Major emphasis is on Lee’s vocal performance.
• Down Below – An odd-time groove with a bass heavy ambient soundscape.
• Heavyhead – A simple, steady bass groove supports Lee’s vocals, with a neat keyboard solo at the end.
• Snowflakes – A jazz fusion tune influenced by Miles’ Davis sound on the album ‘Bitches Brew’. The trumpet playing on this recording is by Jack Lewis.
• Song From Years Ago – A long, dreamy tune with lyrics about memory and old age.
