Meet our 2014 Unearthed High Finalists

Meet our 2014 Unearthed High Finalists

triple j Unearthed have once again scoured the country and come up with the six best high school acts in Australia.

Our Unearthed High finalists for 2014 come from a massive pool of more than 650 entrants, and impressed us with their vision, skills and songwriting this year.

Our champions this year will be announced in a few weeks, and they'll join an illustrious winners list that includes Asta, Lunatics on Pogosticks and Stonefield

Check out the finalists below:

Japanese Wallpaper 'Breathe In {Ft. Wafia}' - (Leibler Yavneh College, Melbourne, VIC)

Gab Strum makes electronic music under the moniker Japanese Wallpaper. His debut single features in Zach Braff's latest film Wish I Was Here between music from Bon Iver and Coldplay, "When I heard it, it just really moved me," Braff said. It doesn't end there though; his silky songs have also earned him endorsements from the likes of Chet Faker, and just the other week Lorde replied to him on Tumblr to say that she was on his Soundcloud.

Hockey Dad 'I Need A Woman' - (Lake Illawarra High School, Illawarra, NSW)

Zach Stephenson and Billy Fleming are surf-rock garage-pop Wollongong duo Hockey Dad, and they sure know how to craft a song that's scuzzy in all the right places. Their debut EP Dreamin' was recorded with none other than Big Scary's Tom Iansek. Press play on it and experience the Leisure Coast.

Azura 'Smoke' - (Citipointe Christian College Brisbane, Brisbane, QLD)

Lauren Coutts' solo project Azura combines elements of indie and classical sounds with a touch of Daughter-like reverb to create smart electronic pop that's more layered than, but just as delicious as, a lasagne.

Daybreak 'Retribution' - (Tranby College/Serpentine Jarrahdale Grammar School, Perth, WA)

Daybreak are a group of 15-16 year olds from Perth who make heavy music with devastating precision. Face-meltingly good music to headbang to, that’s what this is.

Baro 'Cinema {Ft. Emerson Alexander}' - (Beaconhills College, Village Campus Melbourne, VIC)

Futuristic hip hopper Baro is stepping out on a national tour later this year with Allday and Remi. His HOWGOODISGOOD? mixtape features some blissful, jazzy, neo-soul production soundscapes, with stacks of personality and laid back flows that showcase the 17 year old's impressive lyricism.

Lupa J 'Statues' - (Conservatorium High School, Sydney, NSW)

As Lupa J, Imogen Jones makes understated, beautifully constructed music that's written, recorded and produced by her at her home in Sydney. Melding classical violin with her love of electronica, she creates layered alt-pop tunes that are mature beyond her 16 years.

Congratulations to all six of our Unearthed High finalists for 2014! Stay tuned next week as we announce this year's winner.
