Meet Your 2018 J Award Nominees for Unearthed Artist of the Year!
The past twelve months have been truly enormous for new Australian music. There’s been an unprecedented amount of outstanding music uploaded to Unearthed which makes the task of selecting five finalists for this year’s Unearthed Artist of the Year J Award extremely difficult.
Soldiering on the only way we know how, we’ve come to our decision. So, without further delay, here are the five home-grown, independent artists from Unearthed that we believe have made stand-out contributions to Australian music this year. Any one of the five would be a worthy winner and they've all made us incredibly proud this year.
Meet the 2018 Unearthed J Award for Artist Of The Year nominees!

Angie McMahon

Proving that her debut in the 2017 Hottest 100 with 'Slow Mover' was only  the beginning of bigger things, Angie McMahon's star has continued to soar this year. Backing it up with a debut EP and killer songs 'Missing  ' and 'Keeping Time', the Melbourne native opened Laneway as the Unearthed winner and hit the road with Angus & Julia Stone blessing the  ears of everyone in the path of her dense, feelings-heavy songwriting.

G Flip

The list of everything that G Flip has achieved already in 2018 reads like a highlights for a big artist's whole damn career. The Melbourne solo artist announced herself with the irresistible 'About You', propelling her to fawning press here and overseas, sold out national  tours and some huge festival debuts at Splendour In The Grass and SXSW in  Texas. It's all a bit crazy when you remember that even this time last  year we'd never heard of G Flip.

How's it feel to have a sixteen year old make you cry? It's a question that triple j listeners have been asking themselves since KIAN topped the  class in Unearthed High 2018 with his epic solo single 'Waiting'. It's  blend of effortless vocals and acoustic vibes has made for perfect  playlist material. Having survived exams and a surprise visit from Ben and Liam to his school, KIAN's set for a gigantic future.

21 year old Sydney rapper/producer Kwame picked an appropriate song title in 'WOW' that would go to describe the kind of year he's had. The snap,  crackle and pop of that song broke through immediately and there was no  stopping him from there. As well as winning the coveted Unearthed comp to  Splendour, Kwame toured with Peking Duk and Tkay Maidza, even  jumping up with both acts at triple j's One Night Stand.

Slowly Slowly

2018 was the year that indie-punk dreamers Slowly Slowly kicked into overdrive, becoming share-household names with songs like 'Alchemy' and 'Ten Leaf Clover'. Led by frontman Ben Stewart, Slowly Slowly perfected their magic formula of emotionally-charged storytelling and soaring  riffs, earning them a legion of new fans. Alchemy indeed.
