Bio
The Basenji is alert, affectionate, energetic, curious and reserved with strangers. It can be described as speedy, frisky, tireless at play, and teasing the owner into play. The Basenji is somewhat aloof, but can also form strong bonds with people and can become emotionally attached to a single human. Basenjis may not get along with non-canine pets. It is commonly patient, but does best with older considerate handlers. Basenjis dislike wet weather, like to climb, can easily get over chain wire fences, and are very clever at getting their own way. Most Basenji problems involve a mismatch between owner and pet.
Sydney producer Basenji likes almonds, riding his bike and banging out bright, fun dance floor jams.
Tell us about your music - how did you develop your sound?
A big part of developing my own sound has been checking out how other producers do things and taking on board new techniques and different methods of production. For the past few years I worked with Wave Racer on a disco-house side project named Pablo J & The Lobsterettes and that called for a very specific sound. However I feel now with my Basenji project I have a lot more room to move and that I can work in just about any style that I am finding interesting at the time. I think inspiration comes from a variety of different sources but some are definitely more direct than others. I will be bringing a lot of new ideas to the Basenji project in the near future as I am continually being inspired by innovative musicians and producers. It is both the artists that I know personally and the artists that I admire that continue to be a greatest driving force in my music making process.
What can punters expect from a Basenji live show?
I am very committed to bringing something new to the audiences I play to. What I really want to do live is to bring people together with both the music they already like but also something they might not have heard. This means I am continually reaching out to friends and producers for anything new that I can incorporate into my sets. I think it is a lot of fun to play tracks to people for their first time and see their reaction. There is a long list of artists whose tracks I want to support and I really want to get behind emerging artists both locally and internationally. My goal is to provide audiences with music a little different to what they might get on a normal night out. I don't think about genres at all when I am putting together a set but I do try to keep a my live shows thematically or stylistically consistent.
What Australian artists/musicians do you draw inspiration from?
There is far too much talent in Australia to list it all, but I absolutely have to give credit to Cosmo's Midnight and Wave Racer. These guys are amazing producers and great friends, they continually surprise me with the stuff they are working on and always get behind anything new I am doing!
What are you doing when you’re not making music?
I play baseball, I love cooking and I ride my bike everyday without fail. I am working on music full-time right now so it is a really big part of my life. I love going to see live music as much as possible and I really like going to the beach or visiting a nice café. I love summer in Sydney!!
What are your plans for Basenji in 2014?
2014 has already been a crazy year but there is a lot more to come! Right now I am making a bunch of new music and there will be some really exciting shows in a lot of different cities! yew!
Australian music is…?
...so good right now! I cannot wait to discover more Australian musicians and producers <3

Like the marching band lead in, not a fan of *more* pitchshifted vocals but as a whole, cleverly produced. Treads the line between chill beats and banger quite nicely.

This is forward-thinking and quite clever. Getting you twelve drummers drumming for Christmas so this sounds huge live.
