Bio

Bear Essence was astounded when they received word that they would be playing at Bass in the Grass 2014, alongside acts such as Allday, Jackie Onassis and The Living end; but this young troupe of gentlemen have been slowly building a buzz in the Darwin Music scene after recording their Debut EP in 2013 at Jungle Studios in Sydney.

The early beginnings of Bear Essence started in 2006 when lead guitarist/pianist Chris Frew met Drummer Ben Rogers. Fueled by their mutual interest in epic rock and metal they began jamming, with Chris Frew slamming his keyboard through
an old distortion pedal and amp. It wasn't until late in 2010 that singer/guitarist Marcus Guilford and bassist Shane Ratcliffe joined the troupe. Together they started writing alternative rock; "One of us will come up with an awesome progression or riff and we will just jam it out until it feels right, then take it away and work on the finer details". With Singer Marcus taking heavy influences from Muse and children collide;
Drummer Ben is really into Jimmy Chamberlin (Smashing Pumpkins) and Ben Hall (The Butterfly Effect). Guitarist Chris takes influence from Karvivool, Radiohead and Modest Mouse, and Bassist Shane is into Arctic Monkeys and the Red Hot Chilli Peppers.

It all came to a head at the end of 2013 when Bear Essence worked together with Producer Nathan Sheehy at Jungle Studios in Sydney, in creating their Debut self titled EP. The EP consists of 5 tracks, which have all been written, and refurbished over the years to get to the sound that Bear Essence wants today. Although Bear Essence is growing steadily in the Darwin Music scene they are looking to spread out further to interstate and beyond.
