Bio

Having sold out his most recent headline tour, global trekker and Byron Bay-based singer-songwriter, producer and eco-warrior Billy Otto offers up his latest labour of love and most frenetic piece to date. California derives its transcendental and guttural tone from Billy's breakup with his former fiance. The song encapsulates both the anger of heartbreak and also the surrender to the flow of life and transition. Finding a sonic crossroad somewhere between The Beatles and Nirvana, Otto couples together a lofi classic rock appeal mixed with a sensitive electro fuzz, with his smooth vocal signature tying the cosmic composition together. The result is a psych-pop tune destined for the festival stage. Having collaborated in the studio with members from the likes of Gang of Youths, The Temper Trap and Rest for the Wicked, his music creation has always been a collective one.

Following the release of an eminent cover of The Cranberries’ Dreams with Kyle Lionhart and recent release Lady (featuring Dougy Mandagi of the Temper Trap), Billy Otto returns felicitously with a solo single. Crystalised by a chorus you feel you’ve heard a thousand times before, California envelops you in pure nostalgia. This comforting familiarity of the early 70s and late 90s is felt through Otto’s warm-bodied Brian Wilson-esque falsetto harmonies, fuzz charge Silverchair galvanized bass lines, and an immersion of John Lennon inspired hooks.

Love the rolling psych feel of Billy's new track. He's tapped into a colourful zone and it really works.

A sunburst of colour and light, this song is so clean and tight while maintaining that psych steez with those spontaneous samples of French dialogue and chatter.

woah! there's such familiarity here, but also it's incomparably fresh. colourful and charismatic and ready to be replayed again and again.
