Bio
Butcher Birds are full o' sass, big old riffs and scotch. They've played with people like Eagles of Death Metal, The Drones, Black Mountain, Beasts of Bourbon and New Pornographers, yada yada. Their new album "Set My Bones" is out Oct 2nd and is a head-smasher.
Butcher Birds are a four piece from Brisbane full of sass, big riffs and fuzzed-out psych. Their new album 'Set My Bones' is out now!
Tell us about your music – how did you develop your sound?
We like to call it Sludge-Pop - a bit grubby and full of harmonies. I guess, as with most bands, we developed it as we learned to play and sing together. We also enjoy discovering new pedals, or different studio processes - having the time and luxury to be a little experimental like that is something that we really love. Of course, there's the mostly unconscious influence of the bands that we all enjoy contributing to our sound too - Sonic Youth, My Bloody Valentine, The Melvins, that sort of thing.
What were you all doing before this?
We were all singers in different bands! Our new drummer, Donovan, was driving from Lismore to come and see us play- he was a bit of a fan before he joined. Was one of the scallywags causing trouble up front, as I recall.
Tell us about your live show?
Well, we have nice outfits and are extremely loud. On a good night, there's a lot of rude banter and clumsy rock moves. However, we are a group of very anxious, nervous people, so occasionally we'll just try to play without having a nervous spew or falling over. Concerned punters can fix this by buying us a round.
You’ve just released your debut LP. What happens next?
Some summer festivals would be fabulous. We'd also like to continue our great run with support slots - we've been lucky enough to play with some great bands, like Eagles of Death Metal, Black Mountain and the Drones to name a few. It's always a lot of fun meeting these people. And of course, we'd love people to hear our album - we're very proud of it.
Australian music is?
Better than everyone else's.

This bunch have some really good ideas - a lot of them nicked from Sonic Youth, but at least they've spotted them and used them really well. Stacey's vocals set the band apart - a lot of strength and charisma in what she does. They've got plenty of potential and songs to come.

Strong vocals over some nice fuzzy guitar sounds, a little Sonic Youth in places. I like this.

Good, but not mind blowing, the quality is a little blech, but not a bad tune at all.
