BVLLVDS is the stage name chosen by Korean Australian singer/songwriter and visual artist Alice Amsel to represent her first solo release. Taking cues from the origins of the word “ballad” – first used to describe narratives set to music – on her debut EP, Apertures, equal thought is put into the melodic and lyrical paths taken. This collection of five mesmerizing tracks combines elements of post-punk, gothic pop and synthwave with an unashamedly hook-driven songwriting sensibility, countered by a dark and intricate approach to storytelling. Having refined her work ethic and creativity through many years as a visual artist in Sydney and Berlin, the approach to the writing and recording of Apertures was suitably offbeat and DIY.
