Following on from the release of their single ‘Burn It Up’, Melbourne’s party rock n’ rollers The Cheats have just unleashed their debut album 'Hats Off To The Cheats' through Australia's premier garage rock label, Off The Hip records . Armed with two vintage guitar amps and a beat-up drum-kit, The Cheats have recorded 13 tracks of live-wire party rock n roll that is making waves and bringing good times wherever it is heard. The two misfits, Julian Tovey (vocals, guitar) and Tom “Coops” Cooper (drums, vocals) met in 2004 when they joined The Flaming Lips onstage at The Big Day Out dressed in furry animal costumes. Not long after they went on tour through the US and UK with Riff Random - Coops as guitar tech and Jules on Bass. It was over a beer at The Espy once they had returned, that they first talked about starting a band. It was later in 2005 that they started jamming and the songs began to flow, creating a high energy sound based on equal parts rock n roll, blues and punk. Supporting the likes of Eagles Of Death Metal, Bob Log III, Louis XIV, The Zoobombs, British India, Spazzys, The Exploders, Cosmic Psychos, The Meanies, The Grates, The Drones, Brank Bjork & The Bros, The Lost Gospel and Spencer P Jones, The Cheats have cemented their electric live show and developed a growing fan base all over town. The Cheats also recently served as the rhythm section for Shooting at Unarmed Men, the new band from Jon Chapple (ex-Mclusky), co-writing and recording their 3rd album ‘Triptych’. Coops has also just returned from a tour playing drums in the live stage show of psychadelic kids TV show 'Yo Gabba Gabba'. Things will not be slowing down for The Cheats, after winning Triple J’s Unearthed competition, having songs featured in both seasons of Channel 9’s crime-drama Underbelly, and finally releasing a killer debut album, The Cheats are gonna bring the good times with ‘em, and make one hell of a racket along the way! A duo from Melbourne with a reputation for an awesome live show. They've got a pounding raw rock sound and even better...double denim action!
Describe what the crowd can expect when you hit the stage.
Dirty guitar and pounding drums, there might even be a cover or two thrown in for good measure. We also have a massive lighting set up with ten trained monkeys to set it up. Double denim.
What's your favourite Eagles of Death Metal number? Why?
Whorehoppin...cool duck solo
You've already had an impressive list of support slots. What's been your favourite gig?
Bob Log III was crazy and awesome (even though he broke our kick drum!), as was eating Louis XIV's cheese platter.
What's the best thing about being in The Cheats?
It's good fun, plus we only have to share the rider between two! And all bass players want to do is SLAP!!! The Cheats are a slap free zone.
...and the worst?
There's only two of us to carry all the equipment. double denim does get quite hot. It's not easy being in the Cheats!
What have you got planned for the future?
An album, and a change of government. Maybe our own cheese platter...
