Bio
Clove are an emerging five piece band from Melbourne, comprising of Mark Jamieson (Lead Vocal), Ben Hyland (Guitar), Luke Petherick (Guitar and Backing Vocals), Jared Chappell (Bass and Backing Vocals) and Chris Pratt (Drums).
Clove sounds like an amalgamation of mid 2000’s introspective emo and the brash abrasive attitude of 90’s alternative rock, while also giving a nod towards the more melodic aspects of hardcore. Upon immediate listening, bands such as Basement, Title Fight and Australia’s own Endless Heights come to mind, yet the band would fit just as well on any mid 90’s bill.
The band came together in late 2016 with the release of their two track ‘Home in a Haven/Dear You’ which garnered airplay on triple J’s short.fast.loud. Before the group had even made their live debut. ‘I Saw Fire’ followed in early 2017, receiving more comprehensive triple J radio play, heavy rotation on triple J Unearthed and support from community radio (4ZZZ, SYN FM). This momentum was carried through into the second half of the year and culminated in ‘Grey’, the bands first extensive release of music – one which showed lyrical depth, sonic refinement and an extension into more creative song writing. Tracks ‘Tend’, ‘Grey’, Negatively Geared’ and ‘Waiting’ all gained varying levels of airplay over triple J and triple J Unearthed and allowed the band to push further into new territory.
Beginning in November and following a capacity reaching EP launch at Melbourne’s Bar Open, Clove toured relentlessly behind Grey with a run of east coast shows as well as some impressive support slots to close out the year. Early 2018 saw no slowing down, with a west coast tour of W.A. in January and a second east coast jaunt in April. The constant touring proved fruitful, with the band being able to share the stage with a diverse range of acts including WAAX, Endless Heights, 50 Lions, Introvert, Stuck Out, Bloods, Horror My Friend and Better Half.
June brings their new EP 'Hollow and Whole' which is a story of family, love and heartbreak. It focuses on the affect of Cancer within a family unit, in different generations, mental health and resilience in the face of adversity. Singles 'Sober' and 'Glow' show the different faces of this 5 track release, with the huge guitar driven track 'Resilience' due to strike Unearthed in anticipation of the EP's release on June 28th.
