      The Cuckoos first album draws on blues, folk, country, and even punk roots to deliver an edgy and organic pop/rock sound. The band’s focus is clearly on the song as a vehicle for storytelling, picture painting, and protest. Graeme Forsyth explores the varying resonances of an acoustic cornucopia, and lays them down in strong lacework patterns, weaving textures filled with flickering other-worldly colour. Alastair Wallace rides through this sonic landscape with electric flair, creating instantly memorable, soaring melodies and stabbing punctuations of impressionist noise. Screaming fingers of light describe an angel descending or a jet spiralling to an explosive end. It is in this light and dark forest of guitars that the Wolf spins his stories of pain, loss, victory, despair, and hope. ‘An Angel Lies Bleeding’ was written five years ago at the very start of the ‘shock and awe’ invasion of Iraq when an unknown number of civilian deaths occurred (www.iraqbodycount.org).
