Dave Wright & the Midnight Electric Suicide Season EP When Dave Wright sings “Don’t talk to me about heartache, I’ve seen it first hand” in the opening lines of his band’s debut EP, it’s not a customary tale of inner city angst that is on his mind. Rather, the song Dust on the Wind tells of the trials of a life on the land, a subject close to Wright’s heart after a youth spent in rural Victoria. As he chronicles crop failure and stock dying in the drought, the line “My granddaddy, he built this house and now I’ve got to sell…” makes it all too easy to see where the Suicide Season EP got its title. The songs of heartache and rebellion continue with a nod to our Anzac history in Only 19, while Railway Song shows off the band’s narrative driven, country tinged rock to its best advantage – it’s a rollicking little ode to the railway workers who opened up this great southern land of ours.
