About
David Ritchie is putting his cards on the table. After spending over 10 years anchoring different versions of his childhood rock band as a drummer, dwindling group enthusiasm meant it was time to throw in the towel or wade out into the music pool alone. In the coming months and years Ritchie surprised himself as more and more songs materialised. The haunting, coaxing, driving melodies wormed their way into ears and bones and viscera. On Ritchie’s debut EP Watch It Go, beautifully evolved lyrics are held down with grooves inspired by artists like Nick Cave and the bad seeds, Neil Young and PJ Harvey collectively making the tracks a new, nuanced dip into alternative rock. Traces of other heros like David Bryne and Bowie are also evident in Ritchie’s style. Known amongst friends and fans for his entertaining performances in Auckland-based band International Flannel in his early 20s, Ritchie has always played up to a crowd, even from behind the drums.
