Bio

Defron is an English-Australian rapper & poet from Melbourne, Australia. He is the 2009 Revolver MC Battle Champion and was a state finalist in the 2013 Australian Poetry Slam. He has released one album, appeared on national radio & television and with an esteemed reputation for his freestyle rapping capabilities has hosted private & public events including Australia’s National Youth Week launch day and Metro Public Transport’s Victorian Great Race competition for primary schools. His fiction & non-fiction has been published in Going Down Swinging, Verandah, Voiceworks and in 2011 he was shortlisted for the Judith Rodriguez Prize.

Rapping since adolescence, a music career was initially unlikely for Defron after he was diagnosed with hearing impairment at five years of age. Adversity reared its head once again when he was treated for testicular cancer fourteen years later. Forced to mature at a young age through battling severe illness, Defron has a passion for empowering tomorrow’s leaders and at-risk-youth through hip-hop. Since 2009 he has been running his own independent lyric writing & rapping workshops with Freeza & The Push at rural and metropolitan youth services where he promotes overcoming hardship through creative expression and positive resolve.

Today he teaches creative writing & poetry and runs the hip-hop & electronic department at Victorian non-profit youth music organisation The Push. He is currently independently running hip-hop workshops & demonstrations at schools and universities and working on two new albums, one with his band Kilamari and the other his second solo effort, “Maybe You’ll Be Famous When You’re Dead”.

“There are few emcees working as hard as Defron. He's a scholar of the cultural roots of Hip-Hop but at the same time hell-bent on pushing it forward. His skills as a journalist and fiction writer translate into deep, well constructed songs” – Mantra

“Defron is a hungry beast of a rhymer with a vivid pen game” – Omar Musa

“Can’t find many people willing to say a bad word about Defron, he’s someone who everyone respects and likes around Melbourne, and most importantly he also has insane bars” – Allday

“Defron has been putting in work as long as anyone I know in this country. He's an MC in every sense of the word. He's always been dope at making tracks but he's also a battle head from way back that can battle in the current format or put a beat on and smash you with a freestyle. Freestyle is a very easy word to throw around as literally anyone can do it. Not many can do it very well though but Defron is actually one of the dopest at frees I’ve seen, and he can do it for fuckin' ages without the quality dropping. Buy his fucking music” – 360

When that beat drops and it gives you goosebumps, you just know that what's coming next is going to be absolute fire; Then Defron comes in like a fucking pyro, drops that bomb known as William Foster and you just look around you to see everything you once knew is now destroyed because that shit is LIT! I'm just glad my home and contents cover includes fire damage...
