Bio

Compared to the tough streets of New York City – the birthplace of Hip-Hop music and culture – Australia’s Central Coast is a veritable paradise. Make no mistake though – Dominic Brook, a 29-year-old rapper, producer, musician and activist, is bringing the straight talk and empowering message of Hip-Hop to not only his home of the Central Coast but Australia-wide. "I've never really been a city boy – I love Hip-Hop, but I love being by the beach and away from all the chaos," says Dominic, a recent top 10 finalist in the MusicOz Awards. "I gather my thoughts, lyrics and concepts in a quite place which allows me to focus on what I really want to say through my music." From this environment comes a distinct sound blending the larrikin character of Australian Hip-Hop with the earthy Blues of Grammy award-winning musician John Mayer; a sound Dominic has dubbed “Acoustic Hip-Hop”. "I write a lot of my songs on guitar," Dominic says. "It’s natural – I'm not trying to be anyone I'm not. Hip-Hop is always coming out with new sounds, and this is my way of expressing myself at this point in time. I do see my upcoming album having its own niche and own sound." Dominic's current debut single, "Good Day", is being released via his independent label, True-L Music. His refreshing style has been noted by music industry heavyweights, including ARIA award-winning artist Tanya Doko from Bachelor Girl, who says: “[Dominic's songs] ’Imagine’ and ‘Good Day’ are Aussie Hip-Hop tracks with a difference. Dominic Brook avoids the Hip-Hop in-your-face clichés and completely engages you with intelligent observations and questions, against chunky beats and a Jack Johnson-esque organic ease.” Simone Kapsalides, founder and editor of Australia's premier hip-hop magazine Urban Hitz, says: "In the current social climate of Australia, where young people are maligned on a daily basis, Dominic Brook's music delivers important messages with a feel-good vibe. Definitely a refreshing alternative to what's currently on offer!" “Lauryn Hill once said, ‘I needed to make sure I had it right before I got up and told everyone else’,” Dominic says. “A phenomenal MC should have their thoughts together and know why they are an MC.” In addition to promoting "Good Day", Dominic Brook is currently working on his debut album (due mid 2007), looking to organise a publishing and distribution deal for True-L Music, and is set to tour Australia next year. The sky's the limit for this inspiring, dedicated Australian Hip-Hop visionary.
